I'm always interested in seeing people's reactions when I tell them that I have donkeys. Donkeys? Why donkeys and what in the world do you do with donkeys? These are the questions I have learned to expect with every interaction.
First of all, my question is what in the world do you do with a dog or cat, fish of all things? I've discovered that I prefer more of the farm animal types and it's hard for me to understand these small house animals. That being said, I'm glad that there are people who enjoy and appreciate various kind of animals.
I remember when I was growing up, thinking that donkeys were an exotic, rare creature. After all, the only time I saw donkeys were at the county fair petting zoo along with a hairy yak and potbellied pig. These guys aren't exotic and just about anyone who has a little space can own one! I have come to realize how misunderstood these intelligent creatures are and my goal is to help educate others in realizing how wonderful a companion these creatures can be.
Why donkeys? Let me list a few reasons...
1. Small size
These animals are great if you have a smaller pasture. If you've ever thought of getting a few goats then you probably have room for a miniature donkey pair (there needs to be at least two donkeys because otherwise you will have a very sad donkey on your hands). Our smallest donkey is actually the same size as our lamancha wether goat.
2. VERY friendly
My daughter has always been in love with horses and begged to get a pony. I'd heard that ponies can be a bit skittish and a little aggressive at times. We went to a friend's home whose horse had recently had a foal. As we were going into the pen, we were instructed to hold perfectly still and allow the foal to come up to us. We followed the instruction but were never successful at petting the foal. This is stark contrast to our donkeys. Complete strangers can walk into the pen and within minutes be surrounded by donkeys who want to be pet and want to get to know you. We definitely have donkeys who are more friendly than others, but you never have to wait for them to get used to you.
3. Good with kids
I have a rambunctious little crew, but from the first day of owning donkeys, I have been completely comfortable with my littles being in with these animals. I think this can sometimes depend on how the donkeys were raised. One of our Jennies is slightly wary of my three year old (hey, sometimes I'm wary of my three year old!) but her previous owner told me she didn't get the chance to interact with toddlers much.
4. Easy to train
A lot of people think of donkeys as being stubborn but they are actually incredibly intelligent. They will stop and process their surroundings before moving anywhere. If they feel there might be danger they will refuse to move. With some patient and steady coaching, they can easily be trained. Even older donkeys can be taught new tricks. They can be trained to pull cart, pack and give rides to small children. Have fun with them!
5. Compost source
Unlike with dogs and cats, the manure from a donkey can be composted and used in your garden. We have been able to turn our garden into a very productive space because of the manure compost we have added to it. If you don't want to use it, you can sell it for others to use!
6. Oh so lovable!
One day when my husband came home from a long day at work, he quickly disappeared into the barn. When he returned to the house I asked him what he was doing. He replied, "Oh, just having a therapy session with the donkeys." Miniature donkeys make wonderful therapy animals because they are so loving. It does not matter your background, age, color or race, they love you! Give them some attention and you will be greatly rewarded.
We have never regretted the decision to add donkeys to our farm and hope you can enjoy them too!
