The day finally arrived! After a lot of anticipation, we were able to welcome the new donkey herd addition to our farm!
When we realized last summer that we were going to have to geld our jack, Inigo, we realized the problem this was going to create. It is pretty near impossible to run a breeding program without half of the picture - the herdsire. We began searching and making calls and we were excited to find Popcorn. He was tiny, stocky, and spotted, almost everything we were hoping for other than he was only a weanling.
We would have to wait another year and a half before being able to breed with him. That would set us back a few years in the breeding realm.
We continued our search and came across someone in Utah. He had a very nice little jack, MGF Fire In The Hole, that was a true 28". The deal with him was that he was being sold as a package with four breeding jennies and a couple foals. The man was selling his whole herd due to health complications and wasn't sure he was going to be able to continue caring for these little guys.
We decided to go for it! We were so excited about this bunch because of their wonderful personalities, micro mini size, and pedigrees. We have some Circle C lines, Lord's Hill Pips Queak, and MGF. Great, well known pedigrees.
They arrived on a cold, rainy day. We introduced them to the farm and their new corrals. We have not yet integrated them into our established herd yet but are allowing them to get to know each other through the fence first.
I'm sure once we open the gates there will be a bit of rodeo-ing as they try to establish the pecking order of things. We are thrilled to see how this group adds to our herd and are looking forward to greeting the foals that will come along with them.
A new welcome to:
