Lovely Ladybugs

I've always liked ladybugs. They are such a friendly bug. I knew they were a beneficial beetle but I'd never seen them in action until this past week. Have you ever read the book, "The Grumpy Ladybug" by Eric Carle? It begins and ends with some ladybugs eating aphids on a leaf. Ladybugs LOVE aphids! I don't think however, that it is possible for a ladybug to be grumpy. It doesn't match their disposition.

While out wandering in our orchard one afternoon, I happened to notice a ladybug on the leaf of our plum tree. Upon further inspection, there was not just one, not two, but hundreds of ladybugs all over our aphid-infested tree! I had no idea that we even had an aphid problem but I'm glad the ladybugs knew!

Ladybugs are truly the best solution if you have any aphid problem. It was so cool to watch these insects in action. I wondered how the ladybugs find the aphids? How do they know where the jackpot of aphids is to begin with? Can they smell? Do they talk with their friends?

The kids and I had a great time watching this awesome phenomenon. Such a tiny, little bug can do amazing little things that make a big difference! They honestly saved our fruit tree!

Thank you ladybugs!
