An Apple a Day...

Nothing quite compares to a fresh picked apple on a crisp fall day. The only thing that I think could improve upon this experience is a fresh picked apple that is covered in caramel and decorated with all sorts of chocolatey, crunchy goodness. Mmmmmm, so good!

These gourmet treats are actually quite simple to throw together and they look so impressive and taste even better. Such a fun thing to take to neighbors and friends to add some autumn cheer to their day.

First, wash and dry your apples and insert sticks through the top about halfway in. The apples need to be completely dry, otherwise the caramel will slide right off and that would be less effective. Make sure to have a cookie sheet ready, covered with wax paper and sprayed with non-stick spray. Next, place the caramels or caramel bits in a small saucepan and add a splash of heavy cream. Melt over medium low heat and stir frequently. I had around eight apples that I was doing so in order to make sure the caramel didn't cool too rapidly, I kept my burner on low.

Take your apple and swirl it in the caramel and allow the excess to drip off. Immediately dip in crushed pretzels, nuts, sprinkles, candy bar chunks or whatever sounds delicious. The sky is the limit!

If you are wanting to add chocolate, wait until the caramel apple has cooled completely before dipping. Slice and enjoy!

If, for some strange reason, you will not be immediately indulging in this sticky loveliness, then store the apples in the refrigerator. Remove from the fridge about an hour before you want to eat them. Happy, delicious fall!
