These little foals can be quite petite and their adorable little faces too small to fit in any halter. Two of our foals this year fit this description. In order to halter train them, they need a halter! I decided to make on up real quick one day and it wasn't too complicated. With a few measurements, supplies and a sewing machine, it came together in about an hour's time.
First, I measured for the nose piece and sewed that together. I looked at a complete halter and basically just continued to sew the various straps and rings together securely. An important note, each time I made a cut on the strapping, I made sure to run the raw edges through a flame to make them non-fraying
When it came time to make the holes for the back strap, I simply heated a nail over the stove, gripping it with a pair of pliers. The heated nail, slid easily through the strapping, creating a non-fray hole.
The finished product! Now, let's go try it on...
So cute! And it actually fits! If I was to go back and do it again, I would reinforce the strap that runs behind the ears with a couple thicknesses of the strapping. This is where the foals pull and it could benefit from some reinforcements. Over all, not too complicated of a project and a simple fix to a tiny sized foal!
