It was Memorial Day and we had been enjoying a nice day at home together. We were now going about our normal evening duties, when my husband came running into the house to inform me there was a foal outside on the ground!
It is not very common for foals to be born during the daylight hours so we hadn't put our pregnant Dee Dee into her stall yet. She wasn't about to wait for that so she just got to work and delivered her little jack foal all on her own while nobody was paying too close attention. The little guy was already standing on wobbly legs while in the background, lightning flashed and thunder sounded. A storm was on its way, so we scooped up the foal and coaxed the mom into a warm, bedded down stall for the night.
Dee Dee is a maiden jenny, meaning this is her first foal. You never know how things will go for them, but she was a champ! She delivered without any problems and knew how to clean up her foal and allowed him to nurse right away. She was a little protective of her guy (which is a good thing) so we weren't able to imprint on him as well as we'd hoped. He should come around though.
We settled on the name Montoya or Monte for short. His dad is Inigo, and since this is his firstborn jack, we thought it only fitting to carry on the name.
It was a great way to end the day!
